CAPTIONmatic 2.0

User Guide

Chapter 1

Introduction

The SoftCare XTension CAPTIONmatic is an XTension for QuarkXPress, and this version of CAPTIONmatic can only be used with this page layout software.

CAPTIONmatic automatically and precisely attaches captions and credits to picture boxes. Once created, you will never have to bother about them again. Just be creative, CAPTIONmatic will take care of routine matters. If you move the image, the caption moves with it; if you change the image in size, the caption changes as well; if you place the image across the binding margin, the caption is split into two; if you bleed the image, the caption stays within the type area. The caption boxes are taken from a QuarkXPress library—even with formatted dummy text.

Chapter 2

The CAPTIONmatic Library

The CAPTIONmatic library is a standard QuarkXPress library which has to be placed inside the QuarkXPress folder. In this library you can store objects for use as captions and credits.

When you open the CAPTIONmatic library for the first time, it contains all preset objects. In the scroll lists of the “CAPTIONmatic: Caption & Credit“ dialog box these objects are displayed as items for captions and credits. You can change this library by adding additional objects or deleting them from the library.

In Chapter 3 “Creating Boxes“ on page 10 you will find information on how to create caption and credit boxes. IChapter 4 “Editing Boxes“ on page 13 provides information on the exceptional features of boxes for captions and credits created with CAPTIONmatic.

Adding new Objects

You can create custom objects (boxes with formatted dummy text) for captions and credits and drag them into the CAPTIONmatic library.

Note: In order to add a library object to a picture as a caption, choose the corresponding item from the “CAPTIONmatic: Caption & Credit“ dialog box, once you set up the library. For more information, please refer to “Creating Boxes“ on page 10.

1 If the library is still closed, choose “File > Open“. In the dialog box select the CAPTIONmatic library from your QuarkXPress folder and click “Open“. You can also double-click the CAPTIONmatic library file in the QuarkXPress folder. The CAPTIONmatic Library is displayed. This palette contains all captions and credits of this library.

2 Create an empty box and choose any height and width you like.

3 Create a text box relative to the position of the picture, where you want the caption and credit box to appear. The height of this text box determines the height of the caption and credit boxes. When the caption or credit box have the same width as the picture, the “Automatic Box Width“ will be automatically linked to them. By this attribute, the width of the caption or credit box will automatically change when you choose another width or height for the picture. You can insert formatted dummy text in the text box and rotate it – e.g., for credits.

4 Select the picture together with the caption or credit box. Hold down the shift key, choose the Item tool and click on the picture and the caption or credit box to select them. Drag the selection into the library.

Note: If you select more than one text box or only the picture to drag it into the library, you cannot apply this object later. An error message appears.

5 Double-click the new object in the library window to name it.

6 Enter an object name considering the following aspects:

• To mark a caption, enter a name beginning with an underscore (_). For credit names enter the copyright sign (©). Through this identification letter the template will be displayed in the correct scroll list in the “CAPTIONmatic: Caption & Credit“ dialog box.

• In each list one caption and credit can be marked by a “<“ at the end of the name.

These entries will be selected by default in the respective scroll lists of the “CAPTIONmatic: Caption & Credit dialog box“.

Note: You should use a name only once. Otherwise the names will appear twice in the “CAPTIONmatic: Caption & Credit“ dialog box.

7 Click OK.

The object you have created, is displayed in the pop-up menu of the library. When you open the “CAPTIONmatic: Caption & Credit“ dialog box now, the object is shown as an item of the corresponding scroll list.

Moving Objects

By changing the sequence in which the objects are displayed within the library, you can determine the sequence in which the different types of captions and credits will be displayed in the “CAPTIONmatic: Caption & Credit“ dialog box.

1 Click the object to select it.

2 Inside the library, drag the object to the position you want. The new sequence is reflected by the arrangement of captions and credits in the “CAPTIONmatic: Caption & Credit“ dialog box.

Deleting Objects

Like in all libraries of QuarkXPress, you can delete objects from the CAPTIONmatic library.

1 Click the object to select it.

2 Choose “Edit > Clear“. You can also press the Delete/Backspace key. A message appears asking you to confirm that you really want to delete the object.

3 Click OK to delete the object. The object is removed from the library. When you open the “CAPTIONmatic: Caption & Credit“ dialog box again, this object no longer appears in the scroll lists.

Note: Deleting an object from the library has no effect on captions and credits already created with CAPTIONmatic.

Chapter 3

Creating Boxes

CAPTIONmatic enables you to create boxes for captions and credits that are automatically moved and scaled with the corresponding picture boxes. The preset boxes are located in the CAPTIONmatic Library.

In Chapter 2 “The CAPTIONmatic Library“ on page 5 you will find information on how to create additional boxes and insert objects into the library.

Creating Caption and Credit Boxes

When creating text boxes for captions and credits with CAPTIONmatic, you select the picture box you want to attach the boxes to and choose the type of caption and/or credit from the corresponding scroll list in the “Link & Layout: Caption & Credit“ dialog box.

1 Select a picture box in the QuarkXPress document or create a new one. It does not matter which tool is selected.

2 Choose “Utilities > CAPTIONmatic > Caption & Credit“.

Note: If an error message appears telling you that the library could not be found, please drag the “CAPTIONmatic Library“ file into the QuarkXPress folder and choose the command again.

The CAPTIONmatic Library palette and the “CAPTIONmatic: Caption & Credit“ dialog box are displayed.

3 Choose the type of caption from the top scroll list and/or a type of credit from the second list. If you do not need one of the two text elements for the selected picture box, choose “No Caption“ or “No Credit“ in the corresponding list.

You can change between the scroll lists using the tab key and choose a particular item using the arrow keys or by pressing the first letter of the item name.

4 Click OK to close the dialog box.

The chosen caption and/or credit box is attached to the selected picture box. The boxes contain dummy text which comes from the library objects. You can overwrite the dummy text like any other text in QuarkXPress.

Chapter 4

Editing Boxes

All caption and credit boxes created with CAPTIONmatic have some exceptional features which simplify working with picture boxes. They are not only created but also adapt automatically to modified picture boxes and move and split with them when the picture runs across the binding margin.

Effects of Picture Box Changes on Captions and Credits

All caption and credit boxes created with CAPTIONmatic are linked to the picture box. Both position and width are influenced by this link. A caption box could appear beside the picture box (rotated 90°) and a credit box could be located below it. When you change the picture box, caption and credit box change correspondingly.

Note: If you change the size of a caption or credit box later, the link to the picture box will be removed partly. This means that their width will not adapt automatically when you change the width of the picture box. For further information see “Changing the width of captions and credits“. For information on how to restore the link see “Restoring Caption and Credit Boxes“.

The following changes to picture boxes will occur:

• Moving - Caption or credit box move along with the picture box.

• Rotating/Skewing - Caption or credit box assume the new orientation.

• Changing the width - The width of the caption or credit box is adapted and it moves to the right or to the left correspondingly.

• Changing the height - The caption or credit box moves up or down or the width is adapted.

• Dragging the picture box completely onto the pasteboard - The complete caption or credit box is placed on the pasteboard. It might be moved or reduced in width. These changes are canceled as soon as you drag the picture box back onto the page.

• Placing the picture box outside the document page area - A horizontal box aligns with the left or right margin of the document page area. This ensures that captions are still located within the document page area, even if the picture box is bleeded. A vertical box moves along with the picture box and can eventually be outside the document page area. To prevent this, you can change the position. Please refer to

• The picture box runs across the binding margin (facing master pages, running from left to right, Automatic Box Width enabled). The caption box is automatically split into two boxes which are linked to each other. The distance between these two boxes is pre-defined. The changes are canceled as soon as the picture box is placed on a single page again.

• Deleting - Caption and credit box are not affected.

Editing Caption and Credit Boxes

There are several ways to change the boxes of captions or credits. You can move them to a different position and change them in size or delete them like any other box. For Information on how to delete boxes see “Effects of Picture Box Changes on Captions and Credits“.

Changing the caption or credit position in the dialog box

You can change the position for caption or credit boxes by selecting another type of caption or credit.

1 Select the picture box, the caption or credit you want to change is associated with. (It does not matter whether you click on the picture box, the caption or the credit box.)

2 Choose “Utilities > CAPTIONmatic > Caption & Credit“.

3 Choose a different type of caption or credit from the corresponding scroll lists.

• If you do not want to change the position of a caption or credit box choose “Maintain Position“ for this text element.

• To restore a changed caption or credit box choose its original type again.

You can toggle between the scroll lists with the tab key and choose a particular item using the arrow keys or pressing the first letter of the item.

4 Click OK to close the dialog. The selected boxes move to the position you have chosen.

Note: By this method, you can move a credit box from the left to the right side of the picture box or restore the original position after having manually edited the box.

Moving caption and credit boxes

You can drag captions and/or credits to a different position. The link to the picture box remains intact.

1 Choose the Item tool and click on the caption or credit box.

2 Drag the box to the desired position like any other box in QuarkXPress.

If you now move the picture box, caption and credit box keep their relative position to the picture. You can manually position a caption or credit box on the opposite side of the picture box. In case of vertical boxes, the orientation of the text within the box does not change. If you drag the respective edge of the box, the position of the caption or credit box changes correspondingly.

Note: If you change the size of a caption or credit box later, the link to the picture box may be removed partly so that their width is no longer adapted if you change the width of the picture box. Please refer to “Changing the width of captions and credits“ on page 18 for more information. For more information on how to restore the link, see

Changing the width of captions and credits

You can change the width of a caption or credit. The link to the picture box remains intact. This also applies to boxes which run across the binding margin or which are bleeded.

1 Select the caption or credit box.

2 Drag one of the handles to adjust the width of the box as desired.

When you now move the picture box, the caption or credit box keeps its new shape.

Note: If you have changed manually the width of a caption or credit box, the link to the picture box will be removed partly. This means that their width will not adapt automatically when you change the width of the picture box. For further information please refer to the following paragraph.

Restoring Caption and Credit Boxes

1 Select the caption or credit box.

2 Choose “Utilities > CAPTIONmatic > Caption & Credit“.

3 Choose the original type of caption or credit again from the scroll lists. The boxes are restored.

Restoring the original box width

Choosing the option “Automatic Box Width“ you can completely restore the link between the picture box and the caption or credit box (position and width).

1 Select the caption or credit box.

2 Choose “Utilities > CAPTIONmatic > Automatic Box Width“. A checkmark appears next to the option to show that it is chosen for the current text box. If you manually change the width of the box, the option is turned off and the checkmark disappears.

Chapter 5

Setting Presets

When you place picture boxes with captions or credits on facing-page documents that run across the binding margin, you can determine that these boxes split automatically.

The presets affect the open document or, if all documents are closed, they are applied when you open a new document.

1 Choose “Edit > Presets > CAPTIONmatic“. The following dialog box appears.

2 Enable the option “Split text boxes running across the binding margin“ when you want to assign this behavior to caption boxes.

3 Enter a value for “Distance to binding margin“ to set the distance between the split text boxes and the center of the page.

4 Enable the “Split Credits“ option, when you want to assign this property to credit boxes.

All changes are applied immediately.
