DoubleSave Manual
Version 3.3.2 for QuarkXPress
Introduction
The DoubleSave XTension is a product from the performance enhancing series of software modules for the QuarkXPress page layout software.
The DoubleSave XTension automatically creates an extra backup of your document after a save command. This extra copy can be stored everywhere, even on a file server.
The DoubleSave XTension is developed for those who store, from a safety point of view, their documents first on a file server, and after that, they save the document also on their local working station. For this procedure several folders needed to be opened and selected, to select the correct place for storage, on every save action. In practice this method leads to errors, or one will not use this procedure at all because of the complexity.
When the DoubleSave XTension is active, the folder for backup need to be selected only once per document. The name of the backup folder is saved with the document. And even when the folder for backup need to be selected, the DoubleSave has a good idea where to find this folder, and starts with this backup-folder in the selection dialog.
Installing the Program
Insert the disk labelled DoubleSave XTension into your disk drive. Double click on the disk icon to view the disk contents. Drag the DoubleSave XTension icon to the folder containing QuarkXPress.
Upon restart of QuarkXPress a startup screen of the DoubleSave XTension will appear.
As the The Perfect XTension becomes a part of the QuarkXPress software, it is essential for accurate performance of the XTension that the QuarkXPress program has been installed properly as well.
The DoubleSave XTension is distributed as a demo version. To create a full working version, you have to enter a keycode in the DoubleSave>Settings
dialog. This keycode relates to your QuarkXPress serial number. The XTension you have serialized can only be used with your QuarkXPress. You can obtain the key code for your QuarkXPress from your local distributor.
If the serial number does not match with the key code, a message (Demo) is shown in the startup screen of the DoubleSave XTension.
When the XTensions works as a demo version, all functions are available. Only the backup document is not a valid QuarkXPress document. So you should never use a demo version for production work.
Using the XTension
If the XTension is not active, the option DoubleSave->Start/Stop DoubleSave in the Utilities-menu will read Start DoubleSave. If you select this option the XTension becomes active. The option DoubleSave->Start/Stop DoubleSave will read Stop DoubleSave now. The DoubleSave XTension is distributed in a active mode.
When DoubleSave is active and a document is saved for the first time, a dialog will appear to select the backup folder for this document. With this dialog is possible to select the folder for backup or you can choose none here for the case you do not want to make copies of this document. The name of the backup folder is stored with document. So if you use the document an other time, it still remembers the place for backup.
The XTension keeps record where backup normally are placed, and will come up with this folder. So you probably do not have to select a number of folders and/or drives to select the correct folder.
As soon as a backup folder is known for a document, a status bar will show up. This status bar indicates how much of the backup document is copied.
If a document is active, it is possible to select the option DoubleSave- >Change backup folder. With this option you can choose an other backup folder for the active document.
Settings
When the option DoubleSave->Settings is selected, a dialog shows up where you can select the following options:
Remove backup just after complete copy; with this option you can specify if a backup document must be deleted just after a complete copy. If you deselect this option, then a backup document already available, will be overwritten during the backup process. So if an error occurs during this copy, the backup document will be lost. It is more save to select that the backup must be deleted after complete copy, but there must be enough space available on the backup disk, to contain two versions of the document.
Always check backup folder after reopening; with this option you can specify that the first time you save a document, after reopening the document, the dialog to select a backup folder is shown. Since the backup folder is saved with the document (also the specification 'no backup folder'), it might be wise to verify the backup folder after reopening. If this option is deselected, it will always use the backup folder specifications saved with the document.
Display reason for backup folder request; with this option you can specify that if the DoubleSave XTension need a specification of a backup folder, the reason for the request is displayed. Practice has shown that when users start working with the DoubleSave XTension they sometimes become confused why a folder need to be selected.
When the Perfect XTension works as a demo version, it is possible to enter the keycode in the settings dialog, to get a full working copy. You can obtain this keycode from your local distributor. The QuarkXPress serial number is also shown in this dialog. If you have a keycode it is important that you enter this keycode exactly as given by your distributor. Uppercase letters must be typed as uppercase, lowercase must be typed as lower case. If you have entered the correct keycode a message is shown that you have a full working copy.
If you now restart QuarkXPress, the serial number, the XTension works with, is shown in the startup screen of the XTension.
