Euro Font Converter XT | Manual

Introduction

The introduction of the euro has created many problems for designers and typesetters when wanting to apply Euro symbols in text.

During the page lay-out process the euro symbols entered in the original word processed text disappear. After applying the desired font, instead of the euro symbol appearing, a currency symbol, the inequality symbol or an outline square appears. This is due to the fact that 95% of current fonts do not contain the Euro symbol – a situation which will not probably be solved in the short term. The result is the designer has to manually apply a special Euro font in those places where a Euro symbol is required.

Euro Font Converter XT automates the process of applying euro- fonts, whereby valuable time is gained and the risk of omissions is reduced. With one simple application the chosen Euro font is applied to the selected text or in whole documents. In the menu of Euro Font Converter XT the user can make a choice between different euro symbols. There are 3 alternatives which can be downloaded free of charge from the Adobe web site.

= Euro Sans Serif.

= Euro Serif.

= Euro Sans Serif Monospaced.

Installation

To install the software follow the instructions below:

Installation with Mac OS

1 Close QuarkXPress or QuarkXPress Passport.

2 Double click the installer-icon and follow the instructions.

3 On completion of the installation (re)start QuarkXPress.

A Techno Design folder has been created on the desktop. This folder contains information on how to change the demo to a fully operational version, or update a previous version of the software. Previous versions are automatically extracted from the XTensions folder in QuarkXPress and placed in the new Techno Design folder.

Installation with Microsoft Windows

1 Close QuarkXPress or QuarkXPress Passport.

2 Double click on the setup-icon and follow the instructions.

3 In the Choose destination location-window, select the XTensions folder from QuarkXPress and click on Next.

The Choose Destination Locations-window

4 On completion of the installation (re)start QuarkXPress.

After restarting QuarkXPress the Euro Font Converter XT will be recognized automatically.

Personal Entry-code

To convert the installed demo version to a fully operating version of the software the personal entry-code needs to be entered. The personal entry-code can be found on the registration card, or obtained from your software dealer. The entry-code will consist of 18 characters.

Perform the following steps for conversion to a fully operational version of the software:

1 Select settings from the menu Euro Font Converter XT (Utilities-menu + Euro Font Converter XT + Settings)

2 Enter the personal entry-code.

3 Click on OK.

XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XX

Euro Font Converter XT is now a fully operational version of the software, which is confirmed by the message on the screen.

Attention!

From the moment Euro Font Converter XT is started it is an integral part of QuarkXPress, it is therefore very important that QuarkXPress itself is installed and configured correctly.

In order for the software to work correctly the Euro fonts need to be downloaded from the Adobe web site ( www.adobe.com or www.techno-design.com ). These need to be installed or activated first through the font manager application.

After installing this XTension, QuarkXPress has the following additional options:

Euro Font Converter XT in the Utilities-menu and

Show/Hide Euro Font Converter in the View-menu.

Don't Forget:

1 Store the personal entry-code in a secure place.

2 … and post us the completed registration document.

Chapter 4

The Euro Font Converter XT-palette was developed for three reasons:

For a faster choice between different types of euro symbols.

For the application of these symbols either on whole documents or within selected text.

For the final document check.

When selecting Show Euro Font Converter from the screen menu. (View-menu + Show Euro Font Converter) the following palette will appear on the screen:

Palette Euro Font Converter XT

There is a choice between three different types of euro symbols:

= Euro Sans.

= Euro Serif.

= Euro Sans Monospaced.

These fonts can be downloaded free of charge from the Adobe™ web site and subsequently activated. This is achieved very quickly by using a font management programme such as: Adobe Type Manager Deluxe, Extensis Suitcase or Font Reserve.

Document or selection

The palette offers the following options in respect of character conversion:

3 types of Euro symbols for converting a character in a whole document.

3 types of Euro symbols for converting a character in selected text.

Final Check

It is possible that during the layout process, converted Euro symbols are lost. This can occur when a new style sheet is applied using the ALT key (or Option key on the Mac), or through the style sheet option No Style. When using the Final Check-option, Euro Font Converter XT will go through the text to check that no character which should have been converted has been omitted. There are now two possibilities:

When the program finds an omitted character, the cursor will jump to that location and select the character. Through the Euro font buttons the correct font can be applied. Apply the function Final Check again to ensure no other characters have been omitted.

All characters to be converted have been converted to Euro symbols in which case a message will appear on screen:

Where no errors have been detected during the final check, a text box will appear on the pasteboard on the first page, containing the date and time when the final check was performed.

Chapter 5

In this chapter the aim is to get you started with Euro Font Converter XT by looking at a practical example wherein text from a word processor is used in a QuarkXPress.

The Euro symbol in a word processor

Shown in the window below is a Microsoft Word document using euro symbols.

In a word processor a system font such as Arial or Geneva is often used. These fonts contain the Euro symbol as standard. The Euro symbol is entered through a key combination. The key combination used depends on the operating system and the selected keyboard layout.

An overview of the standard key combinations for the use of Euro symbols, is shown in the margin. However, the used font needs to contain the euro symbol.

The key combinations shown not only work in word processors but can also be used in other programs.

The Euro symbol after applying a font

When the text is imported into QuarkXPress and a font is used which does not contain the Euro symbol it would look as follows:

The text in QuarkXPress using the font Sabon

In place of the Euro symbol an outlined square is shown.

Entering the correct settings

Through the Euro Font Converter XT-palette the chosen Euro symbol is applied to the outlined squares with one simple action. However the correct character should have been entered in the properties of the Euro Font Converter XT.

In most production environments this is a one of action in properties. The quickest way to achieve this is to copy an outlined square in the document and pasting this in the character field in properties.

Remark:

When pasting the copied character (outlined square) in the character field, a Euro symbol will most likely appear. The reason for this is standard system fonts are used in dialogue windows of programmes. As previously discussed these fonts do contain an euro-symbol.

Applying a Euro font

Through Euro Font Converter XT-palette the chosen Euro font is applied with one simple action. In this example the text was selected first and then using the Serif-button under selection the Serif Euro font is applied.

The outline squares in the selected text are converted to euro symbols

It would also have been possible to do the page lay-out first. In the example on the next page the text is spread over different text boxes and the outlined squares are replaced with the Euro font by using the Serif-button under the document heading.
