JoDrop 3.0
Drag and Drop for QuarkXPress.
1. Overview
JoDrop enables drag and drop of picture- and textfiles from the Finder (Explorer) and other programs to QuarkXPress documents. The handling of boxes like creation and updating is so much easier than with the built in techniques like mouse tracking and dialogs.
JoDrop also provides some additional features making image handling more productive.
- Publish and Subscribe (MacOS X and Windows)
- Create a text file of all available images in a document for sorting and printing
- Swap lay files against hires images and swap back
- Display the path to each image in the picture box itself
- Warn for usage of image types not useful for your workflow
Drag and Drop
When dropping a text or image file on a free place in a document a box is created and the picture imported in one step. For pictures the frame of the box is adjusted to the image size.
When dropping an image file onto a picture box the image is reimported into the box with no change in the settings of the box. If you want to create a new picture box simply press the Option key during the drop.
When dropping a text file (or text from an open window in another application) onto a text box the text is inserted at the current cursor position. If you want to create a new text box simply press the Option key during the drop.
When dropping a folder to a document all images of the document (including the master pages) are replaced by images with the same name in the dropped folder. In addition all subfolders are searched also. The box settings are not changed during the reimport.
Additional functions
Publish and Subscribe (MacOS X and Windows)
QuarkXPress supports the Publish and Subscribe feature of the classic MacOS. JoDrop adds this feature to MacOS X and Windows. With this feature it is possible to open a picture with the according image editor by double clicking the image. After returning to QuarkXPress the image is updated, if necessary.
Create Image List
With this command it is possible to create a list with the paths of all placed images of a document. These paths are written along with the page numbers into a temporary text file, which is automatically opened with Microsoft Excel for further processing like sorting or printing. If Excel is not available you will be asked for the application to open this text file.
Swap Lay-files
With this command it is possible to replace all your lay-files (low resolution images) with the corresponding hi-res files. A hi-res image is recognized by JoDrop, if the lay file ends with .lay and the hi-res image is in the same folder, with the same name, but no file extension. In addition it is possible to have the lay- and hi-res files in different folders. This is controlled by the preferences JoDrop.ini located in the XTension folder.
Show Image Names
With this command it is possible to show the name of a placed image in the top of the according picture box. When the Alt key is pressed on choosing the menu, the complete path is displayed.
Preferences
With the command Edit->Preferences->JoDrop or QuarkXPress->Settings->JoDrop you can open the following dialog: The settings for Drag and Drop and Publish and Subscribe can be activated and deactivated separately.
There are three warning options availabe useful for workflows without color management. In all cases you would probably get unwanted colors, when printing to a CMYK-device.
