JoUp 3.0
Imposition Software for QuarkXPress
Overview
JoUp is XTensions Software for Imposition of QuarkXPress documents. The usage of JoUp is very easy and intuitive. All actions are done with the standard functions of QuarkXPress, but with a lot support from JoUp. All time consuming tasks like creation of boxes, marks and loading these boxes are done automatically by JoUp.
There are no restrictions due to possible imposing schemes as this is the case with many of comparable tools. The created documents can be saved as templates and reused. The final document with the imposed pages is a normal QuarkXPress document and can be saved for later printing. In addition it is possible to add the pages of different documents on one sheet.
JoUp is available for MacOS (PowerPC) and requires QuarkXPress version 4.04 or higher. A windows version is in work.
Basics
QuarkXPress is a professional layout program, which has the power to create and print a full sheet will all the objects necessary. The amount of work to do this all with the application user interface is a so time consuming process, that nobody does this in his daily work
And that's the way JoUp is based on. The sheet is created with QuarkXPress, the necessary boxes and marks are created by JoUp. Imposing is done by creating temporary EPS files from the target document and loading these EPS files into the boxes created earlier automatically by JoUp.
The user has full control over the sheet and all objects on it. So it is no problem to load the boxes from two or more different documents, something wich is otherwise only possible with expensive and difficult to learn software.
The palette
After installation of JoUp and restart of QuarkXPress the JoUp palette is visible on the screen. With this palette all functions of JoUp can be controlled and activated.
The palette can be shown and hidden with the menu View->Show/Hide JoUp. In the followingsections all possible functions of JoUp will be described.
Boxes
After clicking on Boxes a dialog box appears. With this dialog the necessary boxes for your imposing scheme can be created. For Width and height you have to use the page size of the document to be imposed. If all boxes have a (symmetric) bleeding value around all sides, this value can be entered in the text field Bleeding. Asymmetric bleeding values can be set by the JoUp palette.
Marks:
After clicking on Marks a dialog box appears. With this dialog you can create cut marks for one or more selected boxes. If there are any bleeding values defined for a box, these values are taken into account and the mark is accordingly positioned.
Nr.:
The pages of the document to be imposed must be imported into the created boxes. JoUp now has to know, what page has to go in what box. For that each box has to be assigned a number, which corresponds to a page number in the target document. A box can be numbered simply be selecting it, entering the according number in the edit field Nr. in the JoUp palette and pressing Enter on the keyboard. It is also possible to assign a range of numbers. If you select the 4 boxes in the example below and the edit field contains 1 (and is active), then after pressing Enter the boxes are numbered from 1 to 4 in the sequence the boxes have been selected.
The assigned number will be displayed in the top left corner of the box. The box numbers can also be entered by selecting some boxes and pressing the according keys on the keyboard.
In addition it is possible to modify existing numbers with the Nr. field of the palette. E.g. if you enter +20, then the numbers of all selected boxes will be increased by 20. Subtracting some value is also possible.
Color Names:
Printing color separations requires the according color name to be present on each plane for further processing. For that purpose you can place the eps file Farbname.eps anywhere on the sheet.
Rotation:
For many imposing schemes it is necessary to rotate one or several of the boxes. This can be done with the Rotate button in the JoUp palette. Rotating a range of boxes is also supported. For rotated boxes the box number will be displayed in the bottom right corner of the box..
Bleeding:
The four text fields in the section Bleeding allow you to enter bleeding values for each edge of a box. It is also possible to set the bleeding values for a range of boxes. In that case only the edges are modified, which are on the edge of the bounding box of the selected boxes.
Imposing:
After creation and numbering all necessary boxes the pages of the target document must be loaded into those boxes. For this you have to press the Impose button, which pops up a file dialog for choosing the document to be imposed.
If none of the boxes of the template document are selected, JoUp creates and loads eps files for each available numbered box (e.g. eps of page 1 for box number 1, ...). If there are any boxes selected, JoUp createsand loads eps files only for those boxes. With this method it is easy possible to update only some pages or to impose different documents. The file dialog offers two options:
Format:
With Format one can specify, whether the created eps files are composite eps (Color) or preseparated eps files (DCS 2). Preseparated eps files are useful, if the target document contains trapped colors, as this information is lost for composite eps files.
OPI:
If there is an OPI system available, the setting Omit Tiff and EPS reduces the size of the temporary EPS files. In addition the time for creating these eps files is much smaller. For printing you must use the OPI mode Include Images, as the created eps files arenot known to the OPI server software. The eps files will be saved within the target document folder.
Preferences
It is possible to setup the preferences of JoUp with the following dialog, activated from Edit->Preferences->JoUp:
- EPS (Format, Daten, Vorschau, OPI) Within this group the default values for format (color, bw, DCS), data (ASCII or binary), preview (None, Tiff, PICT) and OPI (with images, without TIFF, without TIFF and EPS) can be specified here. These settings are just the same as from the standard Save Page as EPS dialog.
- HiResBoundingBox With this option active an additional postscript comment is written into the eps file. From this comment the exact size of the page can be extracted. The default behaviour of QuarkXPress is to specify the eps size in whole points.
-Transparency With this option you can switch on and off the transparency of the created eps files.
- Create Logfile In case of any errors or problems you can activate a process, which will record all activities during font embedding. Please send this logfile (PageWizard.log) in addition to the created EPS and a short problem description to support@jolauterbach.de. With this information we will be able to analyse the problem.
JoUp EPS-Export
The eps creation features of JoUp can be used separately from imposing. By choosing Utilities->JoUp EPS-Export the following dialog is shown:
This dialog is very similar to standard dialog Save Page As EPS, but with some important additional functions. So you can enter in text field Page a range of pages like 3-5, 7, 9-11. For each of these pages a eps is created within the chosen folder (Manual.3.eps ... Manual.11.eps). With the check box Abs. Page Numbering you specify, whether the page names are specified like visible in the Document Layout window (with prefix) or by their absolute page numbers (from 1 on upwards). If the real page name contains a hyphen or comma, the mode Abs. Page Numbering must be active for eps creation.
With Selection it is possible only to save the current selected boxes as EPS. The eps size will be the bounding box of the selection.
Within the section Bleed you can specify, how much the saved eps page will be larger than your actual size. This can be useful, if some of your objects are partially outside the page. Please note, that these settings may be added to the values from the Custom bleeds XTensions software. Therefore we recommend to either deactivate Custom Bleeds or to set the bleeding values to 0 (within the standard Save page As EPS dialog).
Installation
To install JoUp simply copy the file JoUp to the XTensions folder of QuarkXPress. After restarting of QuarkXPress JoUp is ready to use. If you got the software per eMail, it may be necessary to unstuff it before copying.
