Photoshop Import XT

for QuarkXPress

Manual

1. Introduction

With the introduction of Adobe Photoshop, one of the most important features was the ability to work with multiple layers. However, to use a Photoshop image in a QuarkXPress layout, you first had to save the image as a TIFF or EPS file. This procedure took time, used extra disk space and increased the risk of errors while duplicating.

Thanks to the introduction of the Photoshop Import XT, you now have the ability to directly import your Photoshop images into QuarkXPress, even when they contain multiple layers!

As illustrated, in the conventional way 4 steps had to be executed to import an image whereas with the Photoshop Import XT just 2 simple steps suffice. The Photoshop images are treated as common TIFF files, which means you can modify them in the same way you would alter TIFF-images.

Photoshop Import supports the color models CMYK, RGB, LAB (4.0), Bitmap (4.0), Grayscale and Indexed colors (4.0).

1.1 Key features of the Photoshop Import XT

The main features are:

• Direct import of (layers of) Photoshop images into QuarkXPress
• User-defined* clipping paths
• Support of Alpha channels*
• Support of color models CMYK, RGB, LAB*, Bitmap*, Grayscale and Indexed colors*
• Saves time and disk space; reduces risk of errors
• Improved output service bureaus (in demo mode)
• Faster output to printer when printing color-separated
• QuarkXPress Passport aware

*Photoshop Import 4.0 only

When using an English, French, German or Dutch version of QuarkXPress, the XTension will automatically adapt its language used in the dialog boxes to your version of QuarkXPress. For all other QXP versions, the XTension language will be English.

1.2 Why two versions of the Photoshop Import XT?

When using QuarkXPress 4.0, it goes without saying that you will also use the 4.0 version of the Photoshop Import XT. The 3.4 version of the XTension only applies to Macintosh not yet running QuarkXPress 4.0. Compared to the 4.0 version of the XTension, the 3.4 version has a somewhat restricted support of clipping paths and color models and no support of Alpha channels.

1.3 Difference between Macintosh and Windows

Between the two systems, dialog boxes may somewhat differ and the 3.4 version of the Photoshop Import XT only applies to the Macintosh user not yet running QuarkXPress 4.0.

2. Installing Photoshop Import

To install the XTension, simply drag the Photoshop Import XT icon into your XPress XTension folder and (re)launch QuarkXPress. QuarkXPress will then automatically recognize and activate the Photoshop Import XT.

Note!

• Since the Photoshop Import XT requires at least 512 Kb of the QuarkXPress memory, it is wise to increase your system’s memory when using Photoshop Import.
• Since Photoshop Import becomes a part of the QuarkXPress software, it is essential for accurate performance of the XTension, that QuarkXPress has itself been properly installed.
• Upon loading the XTension, the QuarkXPress Utilities menu will have the additional function Photoshop Import.
• You should make a backup of your fully working XTension and keep this in a safe place!

3. Photoshop Import Menu

After the installation of Photoshop Import and relaunch of QuarkXPress, the item Photoshop Import will appear in the Utilities menu of QuarkXPress. After selecting Photoshop Import (Utilities + Photoshop Import), a dialog appears on screen.

3.1 Settings...

In the Settings dialog, default settings of the Photoshop Import XT can be modified. When selecting Settings... (Utilities + Photoshop Import + Settings), a dialog appears on screen.:

• Settings dialog Photoshop Import

Show startup screen after restart This option enables you to indicate whether or not the Photoshop Import startup screen should be displayed when starting up QuarkXPress. This setting can only be activated once your copy of Photoshop Import has been personalized with the correct key code.

Enable illustration check This option allows you to specify whether or not the file names of the imported Photoshop images should be modified when saving the QuarkXPress document. These modifications will generate an error message when trying to print a document from within a copy of QuarkXPress without the Photoshop Import XT as QuarkXPress cannot locate the image with the modified names.

When the document is opened in QuarkXPress including the Photoshop Import XT, it will undo the modification of the Photoshop file names, allowing QuarkXPress to relocate the images. An entailing side effect is that a document containing Photoshop images is always changed automatically. Also, when you fail to change the document, the error message “Save changes to the document?” will occur while closing the document.

When disabling this function, the Photoshop Import XT will not modify the names of the imported Photoshop images. When printing the document with a QuarkXPress without the Photoshop Import XT, and if QuarkXPress can locate the Photoshop image, the image will be printed in low resolution without generating any error message. (see 5.2).

Enable clipping paths (version 3.4 only) This option allows you to import the active clipping path (see 4.1).

XTension key code In this field you can enter your key code to personalize Photoshop Import. After entering the correct key code, it will be recorded with the XTension.

3.2 About...

When selecting About…, a startup screen will appear, displaying general information concerning the Photoshop Import XT.

4. Importing Images

Importing Photoshop images is almost identical to the standard TIFF import function of QuarkXPress. The big advantage is that the Photoshop image can be directly imported, without having to convert it to TIFF or EPS.

How to import a Photoshop image

a. Create a picture box in QuarkXPress, using the picture box tool. Select the content tool.

b. Select Get picture… in the File menu or use Command-E. A dialog box appears on screen:

File selection dialog

c. Select a Photoshop image. The type field will read Photoshop

d. Select Open to import the image into your document. The status bar in the bottom left corner of your document displays the progress of the import process.

Note! Due to the direct exchange of Photoshop images you may also use the Macintosh functions Publish & Subscribe.

4.1 Clipping paths

A clipping path is in fact a selected part of an image. Clipping paths are created within Adobe Photoshop. The versions 3.4 and 4.0 somewhat differ from one another.

Clipping paths in Adobe Photoshop

Version 3.4 of Photoshop Import XT (Mac only) When the option Enable clipping paths has been activated in the Preferences menu (see 3.1), only the active clipping path will be imported. The remaining parts of the image will at that time be ignored. To display the entire image, you first have to deactivate the option Enable clipping paths and then reimport the image.

In the Preferences menu (see 3.1) the option Enable clipping paths does not exist as QuarkXPress 4.0 has more functionalities than its previous versions. In version 4.0 of the XTension you have the possibility to either choose a clipping path from a pop-up menu or to select the entire image, directly within QuarkXPress.

5. Error messages

5.1 Color models

Photoshop supports a large number of color models. The Photoshop Import XT supports the most current color models used within the graphics art industry: CMYK, RGB, LAB, Bitmap, Grayscale and Indexed Colors.

When selecting a Photoshop image in another color model, an error message will appear on screen.

Note! The color models LAB, Bitmap and Indexed colors are not supported by the 3.4 version of the XTension.

5.2 Printing without the XTension

To print a Photoshop image imported with a fully working version of the Photoshop Import XT, a demonstration version of this XTension will suffice.

When opening the dialog Picture usage… in the Utilities menu in QuarkXPress without the Photoshop Import XT, the modified image names are marked by a bullet (•).
