WHAT IS PRO GRIDS & GUIDES FOR?
Designers have been using grids for many years, if not centuries. There have been whole books written about grids. If you don't know what they are, then you should read the book Grids by André Jute, published by RotoVision in Switzerland. In short, grids are a set of guides which govern page layout dynamics. Pages which are designed with grids are more pleasing to the eye and have an intelligence to them that other pages may lack. Grids superimpose order and symmetry to keep elements on the page balanced and interrelated, without being boring.
Pro Grids is for creating almost any kind of grid needed for publishing, from fine books to advertising and magazines. Use the powerful automation abilities to calculate all the standard grids or create unique ones from scratch. Once you start using grids in your design, you'll never go back to the old chaotic, hit-and-miss method.
Pro Grids & Guides has several uses besides grid creation. Here is a list of possible uses:
Column setups
Baseline grid setups
Tables
Design blocks
Apply unique master margins to each page or a page range
Show text line counts in printouts
Show page measurements in printouts
Printing Grids and Guides for proofing
Move and Copy guides
Add bleed guides to spreads
THE MAIN PRO GRIDS DIALOG
RANGE
The Range control determines what portion of the current document the grid will be applied to. The pop-up menu allows you select between Current Page, Page Range or the entire document.
ADD TO CURRENT GRID
With this selected all existing grids and guides on the page(s) will remain and new guides will be added to the page(s).
When this is deselected all grids and guides will be deleted from the page(s).
GUIDES
Hitting this button allows you to go directly to the Guides dialog.
APPLY
Hitting the Apply button causes the current grid setup to be executed on whaterver is selected for Page Range. You’ll want to use this button often.
THE GRIDS TAB
The Grids tab is where much of the specs of your grid are set.
The number, position and color of the grid as well as Auto fitting is determined here.
AUTO FIT
The Auto fit selector allows for three selections: Margin to Margin, Edge to Edge and Manual. With either Margin to Margin or Edge to Edge selected, ProGrids will Auto Fit the grid to the current document’s page size using either the page margins or page trim as the grid’s bounds. In order to fit the grid to the current page ProGrids adjusts the settings in the Spacing, Gutter and Repeat controls. When no Locks are active the Gutter is adjusted first, then Spacing and finally Repeat. When a Lock is enabled for a control, that control’s setting will not be adjusted. Only two locks can be active at any time for either the Horizontal or Vertical grid settings.
When Manual is selected for Auto Fit, the auto fit function is effectively turned off allowing for grids that don’t always fill the page. In Manual mode the Locks are disabled.
HORIZONTAL - VERTICAL
These controls allow you to toggle the Horizontal or Vertical part of the grid on or off.
START
The Start control is active only when Auto Fit is set to Manual mode. The Start setting specifies where on the page the grid will start. The Horizontal Start control specifies the Top of the grid and the Vertical Start controls the Left of the grid. When switching from Margin to Margin, to Manual Auto Fit mode the Start controls are filled in with the current Top/Left margin settings.
SPACING
This specifies the size of one block in the grid. The Horizontal Grid's Spacing control specifies the height of a block while the Vertical Grid's Spacing controls determines the block's width.
GUTTER
This specifies the size of the gutter that falls between the blocks of the grid. The Horizontal Grid's Gutter control specifies the vertical gutters while the Vertical Grid's Gutter control specifies the horizontal gutters.
REPEAT
This is the number of grid blocks per page for both the Horizontal grid and the Vertical grid. Entering a number into one of the Repeat controls while Auto Fit is active is an easy way to quickly get an X by Y grid.
COLOR
Here you set the color for the grid lines. The Default setting uses the standard QuarkXPress ruler guide color as set in Quark's Application Preferences.
MOVABLE
By default ProGrids places a Locked grid on your page(s). By checking the Movable control you allow the placed grid to be manually edited on the page. The Grid can also later be Locked or Unlocked using the menu items.
MEASUREMENT
When Measurement is selected, Pro Grids adds a text box to the page(s) containing measurements of the distance of each grid block from the Top - Left of the page trim. These text boxes are placed just outside of the specified grid. The Measurement text boxes are deleted along with the grid when a grid is replaced by a new grid or when Delete All Guides is activated from the menu.
LOCK TO BASELINE GRID
This control is for the Horizontal Grid only. With Lock to baseline grid selected the Horizontal Grid's settings are adjusted so that it will align with the current Baseline Grid. Baseline Grid must be enabled in the Baselines Tab.
GRID PRESETS
The Grid Presets pop-up menu displays 10 Standard grids plus all currently active Presets as set in the Presets Tab. The Standard Grids offer much-used grids that are fit to the pages Auto Fit area (example: 9 Block grid = 3 x 3, 10 Block grid = 5 x 2, etc.) . Standard Grids adjust only the positioning and repeat settings for the grid, not the color or measurement settings. Choosing a Preset from the bottom of this list causes all settings from the preset to be applied. The Custom setting informs you that neither a Standard Grid nor a Preset is currently active.
THE BASELINES TAB
This is where you set up the Baseline Grid.
BASELINE GRID
This toggles the calculation of the Baseline grid on or off. When enabled ProGrids will fill in Quark's settings for Baseline Grid Start and Increment in the Document Preferences Paragraph tab so that the Baseline Grid agrees with the current ProGrid grid. This control must be selected in order to use Lock to baseline grid in the Grid Tab.
FIRST LINE TEXT SIZE
This specifies the height of the first line of text on the page. This text size along with the Margin or Start settings in the Grid tab determines where the Baseline Grid begins on the page.
LEADING
The baseline grid Leading setting specifies the Increment for the baseline grid. This should be set to the leading of the body text of your document.
LINE COUNTS
With Line Counts selected ProGrids adds a text box to the page(s) containing the line count of the baseline grid. This text box is placed to the left of the grid area.
THE MARGINS TAB
Here is where you set the margin that ProGrids will use for its Margin to Margin Auto Fitting function. By default these show the current page's page margins. When the current document is a single sided document the margin controls are Top, Left, Bottom and Right. When the current document is a facing pages document these controls are Top, Inside, Bottom and Outside.
APPLY MARGINS TO PAGE(S)
When this is selected the page margins as set in this dialog are applied to the pages that the grid is applied to. When this is not selected the Margin settings are only used for determining the grid area for the Margin to Margin Auto Fitting function.
THE PRESETS TAB
This Tab is where you go to save and recall entire setting groups (all settings in all tabs):
Name: The currently selected list item’s name appears here. You can change it here to whatever you want.
Replace: Hitting this causes the current settings to replace the currently selected list item
Delete: Deletes the currently selected preset item from the list
Save: This will create a new preset item using current settings and the name that appears in the name field above.
Rename: Will change only the name of the currently selected item on the list to the name in the Name text field.
Use Settings: After you have selected an item on the list, hit this button to change current settings to the ones previously stored using that name.
Make Default: This will cause the current settings to be saved with the name Default. This Default setting is loaded the first time the ProGrids is used in a session.
Revert All: Hitting this will revert all stored settings back to the way they were before you opened the ProGrids Dialog.
THE MAIN PRO GUIDES DIALOG
RANGE
The Range control determines what portion of the current document the guides will be applied to. The pop-up menu allows you select between Current Page, Page Range or the entire document.
GUIDES TAB
The Guides Dialog allows you to place Horizontal and Vertical Page and Spread guides. Depending on whether something was selected at the time of entering the dialog, you will be presented with different choices (some things will be grayed out). If nothing is selected, then you will have choices for placing guides with respect to pages. If something is selected, your choices can pertain to placing guides on and around that selection.
Page-based Guide Placement
You can place both horizontal and vertical guides at the same time by selecting both items and entering position values and counts into the corresponding edit fields. Guides are placed on the page(s) specified in the Range fields at the bottom of the dialog.
Guides can be assigned any of 23 colors from the Guide Color popup menu. Default is identical to the guides you would place by dragging them out from the ruler.
The Guide Type checkboxes, Horizontal and Vertical, are used to select which kind of guides you with to place.
Position is used to determine the exact location of guides. If the Count value is higher than 1, then multiple guides will be placed (creating a grid), each spaced out by the position amount. Position is relative to the origin specified in the Offset from pop-up menu.
Offset choices are:
Pagewhere everything is relative to the upper-left corner of the page
Marginswhere everything is relative to the upper- left of Master Page Margins
Rulerwhere everything is relative to the position set with the ruler zero-lock.
Page or Spread select whether the guide will be a Page guide or a Spread guide. When Locked is on, guides so placed will not be movable with the mouse but can be moved or unlocked by double-clicking on them or by Unlocking in the ProGuides Menu. When Add Crops is selected, crop marks will be automatically created at the edge of the page, exactly aligning with the placed guide(s). Add Rules will place a rule from edge to edge on your page or if a text box is selected, from edge to edge of the box.
GUIDE OPTIONS TAB
Item-based Guide Placement
Guides on box selection
When something is selected before entering the dialog, Guides on box selection will be available. This is because the positioning will be based on the selection.
To place guides which evenly divide an item into a number of columns and rows, enter the desired number into the across and down fields.
The color of the Guides on box selection is set in the Guides tab.
Gutter guides can also be set using the Gutter check. These Gutter guides are placed on either side of the main guides, offset by the amount entered in the Gutters edit box. The color of these Gutter guides can also be set.
Using the Left, Top, Right and Bottom checks you can place guides on the edges of the selected box or group of boxes.
Guides on text selection
Guide on text baseline(s)
If text is selected prior to calling up the dialog, you will have the option to add guides to the baselines of all selected text. In other words, if several lines are selected, Pro Guides will precisely place a guide on each baseline, regardless of font size or leading. Baseline shift will not be taken into account when guide is placed.
Automating table and column setups in a text box
If a text box was selected prior to entering the Guides dialog, Horizontal is selected for Guides on box selection, and across is greater than 1, guides are evenly distributed over the size of the text box. This is useful for doing tabular columns for tables and for creating grids. By using the Set TABs option you can automatically set corresponding TABs to go with those guides. You can also specify a Gutter between columns. When gutter is set to zero, the columns will be simple even divisions of the box. TAB settings can be one of two: Between guides sets center TABs and Offset from guides sets left TABs to the right of the guides the amount specified. To use the Set TABs option, horizontal must be checked under Guides on box selection.
For more intense and robust automated table setups, you owe it to yourself to investigate GLUON TableMaker.
Guides on bleed
You can place spread guides outside the page area using Guides on bleed. These bleed guides are placed around the outside edges of the spread(s), offset by the amount set in the Bleed edit box. The color of the Bleed guides can also be set here.
GUIDE FUNCTIONS TAB
Guides
Here you can select which types of guides are included in the operation of the
Guide Functions.
Copy
Selecting this function will
Copy the guides on the current page to the page specified in the To Page: edit box. If Auto Mirror is selected the copied guides will be flipped horizontally for right to left and left to right page copies.
Shift
With Shift you can move the guides on a page, a range of pages or the entire document. The X and Y shift amounts can be positive or negative amounts.
Flip Horizontal
Selecting this function will flip the guides on the horizontal axis.
Delete
Using this function you can delete the guides on a page, a range of pages or the entire document. Be careful using this function as the deletion of guides can not be undone.
PRINT GUIDES
The Print Guides... menu item allows you to make a printout of your page(s) showing the guides. The controls include Master Guides, Quark Guides, GLUON Grid, GLUON Guides, GLUON Cropster guides and Baseline Grid for which guides and grids to print and the option to Convert Grid/Guides to Rules. Hit Print Guides to do just that. When printing the guides, we temporarily place rules over the guides and then remove them at the end of printing. Convert simply skips the removal phase, leaving the rules on your page.
DELETE ALL GUIDES
The Delete Guides menu item allows you to delete the all guides on the current page. This also deletes any measurement boxes placed on the page by Pro Grids.
LOCK/UNLOCK ALL GUIDES
The Lock Guides and Unlock Guides menu items allow you to lock and unlock all of the guides on the current page.
OPEN GUIDES
The Open Guides menu item allows you to open a previously saved set of page guides.
SAVE GUIDES
The Save Guides menu item allows you to save the current documents guides, including colors and lock status. Colors will not be seen unless the Gluon Pro Grids & Guides or the included GuidesViewer is present.
EDIT GUIDES
This is perhaps the handiest of guide features. When you double-click on a guide with the Move Tool, a mini-dialog will appear which will allow you to adjust important guide attributes such as position, color, lock status and whether it has crop marks or not. Use this often and you wont go back to the old way!
THE GUIDES VIEWER
Included with Pro Grids & Guides is the Guide Viewer XTension. This is a freely distributable XTension that allows users without Pro Grids & Guides to view the guides created by Pro Grids & Guides in their correct colors. Users of the Guide Viewer XTension will not be able to edit locked guides.
