Resize XT User Guide Version 4.1

XTending the Dimensions of Publishing

What Resize XT Does…

Resize XT is an XTension for QuarkXPress versions 4.0.4 and later. You can scale groups of boxes, lines, and pictures to a target size or per- centage, or interactively with the Resize Tool. Selections can be scaled proportionately or to different horizontal and vertical sizes. Target sizes range from 10% to the size of the document’s pasteboard.

Setting Preferences

The preferences serve as the default scaling options for both tool and dialog resizing. If scaling via the dialog, it is possible to reset the options for a single-use when you scale.

Select Edit > Preferences > Resize XT.

Check the desired scaling options

Each option activates scaling for that attribute.

Graphics

Scales the graphic along with its box, horizontal & vertical. Please note that anchored graphics are considered a part of the text flow and are not handled unless Text is checked.

Line Thickness

Scales the width of lines along with their length, horizontal & vertical depending on rotation.

Runaround

Scales the text runaround value of objects, horizontal & vertical.

Frame

Scales the object’s border thickness, using Single-Value Items preference if scaled non-proportionally.

Text Gutter

Scales the gutter width in multi–column text boxes, horizontal according to rotation.

Text Insets

Although the interface allows only a single value, four Text Insets are stored internally. Resize XT sets the horizontal and vertical values separately for non-proportional scalings.

Text

Check this box to enable scaling of Text Attributes. Please note that anchored graphics are considered a part of the text flow and their scaling is enabled here.

Scale Entire Chain

Scales all text in a text chain if any part of that chain scales.

Horizontal Scale

Adjusts the horizontal scale of the text if the text box is scaled non-proportionately.

Paragraph Attributes

Scales paragraph-based text attributes such as leading, indents and space before and after.

Remove Lock to Grid

Turns off ‘Lock to Grid’ for scaled text to prevent awkward spacing. The grid value is document-wide and cannot be scaled without affecting unselected objects. Paragraph Attributes must be active to use this option.

Mimic Grid

Optionally, you can convert the leading of Lock to Grid paragraphs to mimic their appearance under Lock to Grid. This converts the leading values to a fixed value replicating the position set by the grid and then scaled. Remove Lock to Grid must be active to use this option.

Check Exchange Scaling, if desired, and set tolerance.

Activate to exchange vertical and horizontal values when scaling rotated objects are within a defined number of degrees from verti- cal. This swap will scale the objects correctly according to their cur- rent orientation. A value between 0 and 45 degrees defines the tol- erance plus or minus from vertical. If active with a setting of 0°, the scaling percentages are exchanged only on objects rotated exactly 90 or 270°. A 10° value exchanges scaling on objects rotated 80- 100°, or 260-280°. If this option is unchecked, horizontal/vertical values are applied to horizontal/vertical attributes, no matter their orientation, as previous versions did.

Choose a Single-Value Items Use option.

Certain QuarkXPress objects appear in two-dimensions but have only a single value to define them. Frame Width and Corner Radius on all boxes; as well as Line Width, depending on the angle are controlled by a single value. This option controls how these attributes are handled when scaled non-proportionately.

Scaling to a Percentage

Scale selections to a known percentage using the Resize XT dialog. Scaling via the dialog assures exact control over the percentage.

Select items to be scaled with item or content tool.

Single or group objects as well as multi-selections are supported.

Choose Items > Scale Items.

Check Anamorphic Scaling, if desired.

Leaving Anamorphic Scaling unchecked insures proportional scaling. Checking this option reveals separate edit boxes for hori- zontal and vertical scaling percentages.

Enter Scale percentage(s).

As values are entered, corresponding Width & Height fields update. If scaling proportionally, only one scale value is available.

Items to Resize displays the count of selected items. Click Options… to review or modify scaling preferences. Changes affect only this operation and do not reset the defaults.

Click Scale to resize the selection.

Progress is displayed at the bottom of the dialog.

Scaling to a Size

Scale selections to a known size using the Resize XT dialog. Scaling via the dialog assures exact control over the final dimensions.

Select items to be scaled with item or content tool.

Single or group objects as well as multi-selections are supported.

Leaving Anamorphic Scaling unchecked insures proportional scaling. Checking this option reveals separate edit boxes for hori- zontal and vertical scaling percentages.

Enter Width and Height.

If scaling proportionately, enter either a Width or Height; the last value entered determines the size. Enter Width and Height if scal- ing anamorphically. Corresponding Horiz. Scale & Vert. Scale val- ues update after you enter a value.

Items to Resize displays the count of items selected for scaling.

Click Options… to review or modify scaling preferences.

Any changes to the settings affect only this operation and do not reset the stored preferences.

Click Scale to resize the selection.

Progress is displayed at the bottom of the dialog.

Scaling with the Tool

Resize XT adds its own tool near the bottom of your QuarkXPress tool palette allowing you to scale your items interactively without a prede- termined percentage or size.

Select items to be scaled with item or content tool.

Shift-click additional items or groups to add them to the selection.

Click on the Resize Tool.

A magenta line surrounds the active Resize selection. The tool remains active, allowing multiple adjustments to the selection. Clicking off the selection onto another object or tool deactivates the Resize tool.Closing the active document will also deactivate the tool to avoid opening a document while in the Resize mode.

Click on a handle and drag it to scale the selection.

Size the outlined selection as if you were sizing an ordinary box, by dragging any of the handles. Remember, clicking off the selection onto another object or tool deactivates the Resize tool. Choosing a menu item or key command will alert you to exit the Resize mode first. Closing the active document will also deactivate the tool to avoid opening a document while in the Resize mode.

Note: You may see the Resize dialog flash on your screen when scaling with the tool. On complicated scalings, the dialog displays longer and the progress bar gives you feedback on your operation.

• Am I Scaling with Resize XT?

With the introduction of QuarkXPress’s own scaling routines in version 4.0, it is sometimes difficult to tell whether QuarkXPress or the Resize tool is doing the scaling. With the introduction of version 4.1, Resize XT surrounds its active selection with a one point magenta border. You may need to zoom in see the line on some monitors or large selections. If this border is not visible, you might have accidentally deactivated the Resize tool. Remember, clicking off the selection onto another object or tool deactivates the Resize tool. Closing the active document will also deactivate the tool to avoid opening a document while in Resize mode.

• Choosing Anamorphic Options

Early versions of Resize XT scaled the horizontal attributes of an object with that value, no matter what the objects rotation, when non-propor- tionately scaled. Version 4.1 introduces the capability to scale objects according to their rotated orientation. i.e. the width of a text box rotat- ed to 90° is now a vertical aspect of the layout. These options only affect scaling only when Anamorphic is active, and the horizontal and vertical scaling percentages are different.

Exchange Scaling within ___°.

Activate to exchange vertical and horizontal values when scaling rotated objects within defined number of degrees from vertical. This swap will scale the objects correctly according to their current ori- entation. Enter a tolerance value for this action. A setting of 0° exchanges the scaling direction only on objects rotated 90 or 270°. A 10° value exchanges the scaling on objects rotated 80-100°, or 260-280°. If this option is unchecked, horizontal/vertical values are applied to horizontal/vertical attributes, no matter their orientation, as previous versions did.

Single-Value Items Use _____.

Certain QuarkXPress objects appear in two-dimensions but have only a single value to define their size. Frame Width and Corner Radius on all boxes; as well as Line Width, despite the lines direction. This option controls how these objects are handled during non-proportional scalings.

Note: Although the interface allows only a single value, four Text Insets are stored internally. Resize XT sets the horizontal and verti- cal values separately for non-proportional scalings.

Interpolate.

The angle of rotation determines the scale value applied to the attribute. Angles closer to horizontal adopt a percentage nearer to the horizontal value; angles of rotation closer to vertical adopt a scaling closer the vertical value.

Average.

Single-value items are scaled with an average of both values, no matter the angle of rotation.

Smallest, Largest, Horizontal or Vertical.

Single-value items are scaled with the selected value, no matter the object’s angle of rotation.

• Item Attributes

Some item attributes cannot be scaled nonproportionally. Most of these items are logically scaled in the appropriate direction. However, Frame Width and Corner Radius do not have a logical direction for scaling since only one value represents both horizontal and vertical measure- ments. In these two cases, the Single Value Items Use preference determines the value used.

The following details which attributes controlled direction, if Exchange Scaling is not acting on the item.

Items that use Vertical Only

paragraph leading
space before & after paragraphs
thickness & position for rule above paragraph
thickness & position for rule below paragraph
first baseline
inter-paragraph space
text size
vertical font scaling

Items that use Horizontal Only

left, right & first paragraph indents
left & right indents for rule above paragraph
left & right indents for rule below paragraph tabs
corner diameter*
frame width*
gutter width
horizontal font scaling

Items that use BOTH scales

general box geometry (i.e. boxes, lines, polygons)
runaround offsets line thickness (depending on rotation) text insets
graphic size
graphic position within the box

Note: Although the interface only allows a single setting for Text Inset on a box, it stores four values internally. Resize XT sets these values separately when necessary.

• Horizontally or Vertically Scaled Text

Since it is impossible for text to be both Horizontally and Vertically Scaled, Resize XT converts all non-proportionally scaled text to an equivalent Horizontally Scaled value. If the original text was Vertically Scaled, it is converted to Horizontally Scaled but the scaling compensates to maintain the proper visual effect.

• Orthogonal Lines

Lines drawn with the Orthogonal Line Tool by definition are restrict- ed to positions of 0, 90, 180 and 270° although they can be rotated after creation. Scaling a line at any other position non-proportionally results in a change in angle to attain the correct positioning. For this reason, orthogonal lines are converted to standard lines during scaling. These are lines of equivalent thickness and position as if they had been created with the Line Tool. When editing these lines after a scaling, you can still constrict the line angle to orthogonal directions by holding down the Shift key when dragging the endpoints.

In previous versions of Resize XT, lines drawn with the Orthogonal Line Tool sometimes acted unexpectedly when scaled non-proportion- ally, even changing position due to rotation or presumed rotation. The conversion to ordinary lines further prevents this possibility.

Resize XT versions prior to 4.1 and greater than 3.0 behaved this way.

• Scaling Rotated Items

When scaling non-proportionally, each item’s orientation becomes important so that horizontal and vertical item attributes are handled correctly. Without skewing the boxes and the content, only items rotat- ed n multiples of 90° can be handled precisely. And while precise, skewed boxes and content would not be a help in the new layout.

When scaling a layout, Resize XT’s goal is to quickly create a usable layout of new dimensions which, with minor adjustments and editing, is ready for its new purpose. Nevertheless, the all possible rotations must be dealt with reasonably.

Without Exchange Scaling

In previous versions of Resize XT, the height of an item was scaled with the vertical scaling percentage even if the item was rotated. This meant that elements rotated 90 or 270°, appeared to change width. If Exchange Scaling is inactive, or if the item is outside of its defined tolerance, version 4.1 will continue to behave this way.

Resize XT versions prior to 4.1 and greater than 3.0 behaved this way.

With Exchange Scaling Active

When Exchange Scaling is active any items rotated within the defined tolerance of 90 or 270° will exchange scaling percentages. Vertical attributes are scaled at the horizontal percentage, and vice versa, for a more useful result.

Items at 90 and 270 degrees

This is common for items which are rotated at right angles for folding or imposition considerations. When items are rotated at 90° or 270°, Resize XT can decisively scale horizontal or vertical characteristics according to their current orientation. For example, a text box rotated 90° and then scaled horizontally would adjust tabbed data, but not modify the leading. When Exchange Scaling is active, items at 90 and 270° are adjusted no matter what the tolerance. Set to zero (0) degrees to exchange scale values only at vertical.

Items at other angles

Items at angles not multiples of 90° cannot be scaled mathematically without skewing the boxes and content. Since this interferes with the new layout’s usefulness, Resize XT offers another solution.

How Resize XT handles these rotated objects depends on whether they are within the tolerance set in the options dialog. With a tolerance of 40°, a box rotated 15 or 45° has horizontal and vertical modifications applied as if it were in a normal 0° orientation, and a box at 75° is treated as if it were at 90°.

With the Resize Tool

When scaling an item or group that contains rotated items with the Resize Tool, the resulting resized item may not match rectangle used by the Resize Tool. For example, if you scale an item rotated at 60° by dragging in the right side of the Resize box, the width of the item will will decrease but due to the rotation, the height and width of the item's bounding box will both decrease. Resize XT will reset the Resize rectangle to accommodate the new bounding box of the item(s).

While Resize XT attempts to maintain the top-left position of the items and prohibit the user from scaling off the pasteboard, sometimes the resulting item may be too large for the pasteboard. If this situation arises, Resize XT will move the resized item so that it is completely on the pasteboard.

The only workaround for these exceptions is to unrotate the items before scaling. If this is not a feasible part of your workflow, be very careful to proof any rotated items after resizing.
