INSTALLING ClikX 4
THE PALETTE
ClikX 4 is an XTension that gives quick access to productivity tools, frequently used standard QuarkXPress functions and to very comprehensive information on documents.
Once installed, ClikX 4 is available in the View menu; it appears as a small palette having the same width as QuarkXPresss Tools Palette.
The ClikX 4 palette can be divided into three main sections:
- shortcut buttons either mirroring functions available in the QuarkXPress menus, or building on top of standard functions; these are the top four buttons, pertaining to grids, magnetism, item selection and view magnification (zooming)
- palette openers, allowing quick access to certain QuarkXPress palettes, namely the Document Layout palette , the Colors palette and the Style Sheets palette.
- unique and very handy new functions; these are the Fit Item to Contents, the Overset Manager, useful text tools, the Recent Documents Manager and a very comprehensive information gathering tool to report on various text counts, image information and document specifics.
The content of the palette can be customized by selecting the required buttons from the Preferences dialog.
GUIDES AND GRIDS
This two-state button toggles the visibility of the Guides, of the Baseline Grid and of Invisible characters.
Clicking the button without any modifier keys toggles the guides visibility, note that the button's icon reflects this setting only.
Clicking with the key toggles the baseline grid.
Clicking with the key toggles the invisible characters.
SNAP TO GUIDES
This two-state button toggles the guides and baseline grid's magnetism.
If there is more than one item selected, clicking this button while holding the key will bring up the Space/Align
dialog.
SELECTION TOOL
Depending on the state of this button (and the selection's status) a click on it will either deselect the current selection, or will re-select the last know selection along with the tool used.
This feature is very handy when working on a complex layout or under high magnification and a spare space is needed to deselect the current item; or inversely, when a partially masked item must be re-selected.
Depending on the state of the selection, a click on this button will react in one of two ways: if there is a selection, each click will alternate the view between Last Known Zoom and Fit View to the Selection if there is no selection, each click will alternate the view between 50% and 200%.
DOCUMENT LAYOUT PALETTE
Depending on the state of this button a click in it will show or hide the Document Layout palette.
COLORS PALETTE
Depending on the state of this button a click in it will show or hide the Colors palette.
STYLE SHEETS PALETTE
Depending on the state of this button a click in it will show or hide the Style Sheets palette.
FIT ITEM TO CONTENTS
This button is only active when a text item or a picture item is selected.
It will re-size to item's bounds so that it perfectly fits its contents.
For picture items, both horizontal and/or vertical bounds get adjusted so as to the fit the picture.
For text items, this button only operates on single boxes or on the last box of a text link. The height of the item gets adjusted so as to fit the text within it; the resizing takes into account cases where the last paragraphs justification is forced by an empty Carriage Return and in the cases where the last line of text has got a Rule Below.
OVERSET MANAGER
This menu allows you to find and display overset texts in a document.
The first two menu items are only enabled when a text item (or story) ends with the overflow icon.
The menus items are :
flow the overset text in a text item with the same characteristics as the overset item; the new item is linked to the story and is positioned directly underneath it; its height will be calculated so as to display the maximum amount of the overset text,
flow the overset text in a text item mimicking a Sticky Note; the Note is linked to the story and is positioned over the overflow mark; its height will be calculated so as to display the maximum amount of the overset text,
link a Note to all overset items (stories),
remove all overset Notes; after this command, all overset texts will return to their standard state and display the overflow icon Overset Notes can also be deleted as any standard QuarkXPress item. A text item whose overflow only contains an empty line (a single Carriage Return) isn't considered as «overflowing».
TEXT TOOLS
This menu is only enabled whenever a text item is selected.
The first three items are only enabled when some text is selected within the current text item.
The menu's items are:
convert the selected text to lower case letters,
convert the selected text to upper case letters,
convert the selected text to word caps,
paste the clipboard's contents as plain text, without any of its copied styles -- this is very useful when transferring some text from another document without importing any of its style sheets.
Note that all styles and attributes are discarded, including special QuarkXPress characters which are converted to Carriage Returns,
display a Character Table for any font; this allows you to easily and quickly insert characters whose key combinations you have forgotten, or characters from a Dingbat font. Click on each required character then click the validation button. The chosen character(s) will be inserted in the text using the selected font.
INFORMATION REPORTS
Depending on the selection, this button will display one of three possible information dialogs.
If there is no current selection, then the whole document will be analyzed and a comprehensive report on requested items will be compiled and displayed.
If the current selection is a text item, various information about the text will be compiled into a report. Reported information includes character/word/line counts, used fonts, paragraph and character styles sheet and overset count.
If the current selection is a picture item, the information is based on the type of image it contains. Some images will return font and color definitions, others resolution and compression; all images return modification status/date, file size, type, and image dimensions information.
All report dialogs can either export the displayed data into a standard text file, or to flow the data onto the Pasteboard of the current document.
RECENT DOCUMENTS MANAGER
This menu displays the list of favorite documents followed by the list of recently opened documents.
Without achieving the power of fully-fledged Workflow Tools, this tools is very useful to quickly access various frequently used documents, whichever folder hierarchy they are stored into.
The first menu item empties the list of recent documents, preserving the favorite documents and all currently open documents.
The Favorite Documents section gathers the documents whose aliases are stored in the «xt.alef.recent» folder within the «Favorite Items» of the System Folder*; this represents the list of documents you wish to use on a more permanent basis.
* The «Favorite Items» is available from the Apple Menu, and can be populated from any Mac OS 8.5 file selection dialog (this is also known as the Navigation Manager); please refer to your Mac OS documentation.
The Navigation manager can also be added to Mac OS systems 7.5 to 8.1; please consult the Apple site for more information and to download this System extension.
If ClikX doesn't find the «Favorite Items», it will create the «xt.alef.recent» at the topmost level of your disk.
The Recent Document section gathers the recently opened documents that are still available on your disk.
Simply select an item from the menu and the corresponding document will be opened, or if already open, will be brought to front. The various attributes of the menu items inform you of their status: If you press the key when clicking the menu, the documents access path will be displayed instead of their file names.
