Introduction
Blacklining 6 is for QuarkXPress 6 (6.1 and above) only, Mac OSX, or Windows. Blacklining is intended for corporate, financial and legal document production where every change to text must be recorded.
Blacklining is an XTension to QuarkXPress that tracks changes made to the text of a document as it is being revised. It is designed to allow a user or viewer of an XPress document to be able to see a complete history of changes that have occurred. Text inserts are shown as underlines and text deletes can either be shown as struck-through, or have a caret mark in the text where a delete has occurred. Blacklining also keeps a revision history that can show changes made at different revision cycles. By choosing different revision cycles it is possible to show a complete history of a document as words that have been inserted or deleted will appear and disappear based on the revision level being displayed.
Preferences govern the screen display and the printed output, and these can be set for individual revision levels as well. In addition there is an option to highlight all on-screen marks and have side bar markers on printing.
A special characters feature allows a live header of a document to be created so that, if used on a master page for example, all pages can have document information such as name, date and time, as well as blacklining revision numbers and a checksum.
A history file records the actions taken in a documents history and this can be printed out or exported as xml or other formats, which may be useful for billing or auditing.
Blacklining can be controlled from and by other applications or XTensions, please contact us if you have a special workflow requirement.
Other Blacklining products are in development and coming soon: Blacklining server will allow multiple users across one document; Blacklining Pro with added features. Blacklining for Adobe InDesign is coming soon, please contact us if you require it for this application.
Thank you for using Blacklining, do let us know if you have any specific requirements or suggestions. We like to hear from our customers!
Please register your software so that we can keep you updated with the latest news and releases of the program.

System Requirements
Blacklining is for QuarkXPress 6, (6.1 and above) and Macintosh OSX, or MS Windows operating systems. Any version of OSX or Windows that will allow QuarkXPress 6.1 to run will enable Blacklining to load.
(back to the table of contents)
Installation
Quit QuarkXPress and copy the Blacklining XTension to the XTensions folder within your QuarkXPress application folder. Re-start your XPress application and Blacklining will load. You will also need a Blacklining Key XTension and an unlock code to switch out of demonstration mode. After installing the Blacklining Key XTension and on first run of the program you will be asked to enter the unlock code which will be supplied to you with the key.
Demonstration Mode
The demonstration version of Blacklining is fully functioning but will restrict the saving and printing of documents. If you have installed Blacklining as a demonstration version and wish to upgrade to the production version you will need the Blacklining Key XTension and a key code. These will unlock the program.
WARNING
Any files you use in demonstration mode will be watermarked with a Blacklining Demonstration message. This message cannot be removed from those documents even if you upgrade to the production version. Please ensure you only use the Blacklining Demo on copies, not originals of important documents or only on test documents.

What’s New ?
Well everything actually! It’s all new code and so a completely different method of marking and displaying the marks in the text. For those of you that have upgraded from previous versions you may be pleased to know that we no longer use hidden text but a much more reliable object attribute system. Using this method we have been able to give you a much more powerful and robust program.
Deleted text - can be shown as Strike Through or by the original method of the Caret Mark.
Undo - Redo is fully supported and functional for all Blacklining operations including Copy, Cut and Paste.
Special Characters - allow a live information header to be built on the document of items such as document name, date and time, blacklining revision levels etc.
History Palette - gives document history information. A text box can be assigned to be a History box and will automatically update as new history is generated. Alternatively the History can be exported as tabbed text or xml.
Improved Preferences - with the option to highlight on-screen all Blacklining marks. Any function can now be assigned a short- cut key.
Improved Merge and Clear functions.
New Paste with Marks. Allows copy and paste with original marks - not just as an insert.
Open architecture allowing ease of interface with other developers and customization.

Preferences
Use the preferences to tailor Blacklining to your requirements. Go to: QuarkXPress -Preferences under which there are 3 Blacklining options, these are:
Blacklining Set Up - allows the choice of display and print line weights and positions. Highlight marks when checked will highlight every mark on screen, check the use colour option if you need to use coloured marks to be defined on the next screen.
Blacklining Revision - enables the the definition of colours for Screen, Print, Highlight and Sidebar for each revision level. Enter a revision level number first and then add it or edit it from the list.
Blacklining Keys - enables the assignment of a short cut key to every Blacklining function. These will take priority over other QuarkXPress short cut keys, so be careful to choose those that do not clash.

Blacklining Menu
Many of the menu items have the same functions as those in the palette and most are self-explanatory. The others are:
Paste with Marks - If text is copied containing Blacklining marks that is subsequently pasted using the Edit menu item (command-v) with Blacklining running it will be seen as an insert and consequently underlined. Using Paste Special the Blacklining marks will be retained from the original and reproduced exactly as they appeared in the Copy or Cut.
Remove - This incorporates the Merge function as well - see the Merg and Remove section
Special Characters - is a tear off menu listing all the special characters that can be inserted. These are also available from the Special Character Palette which if hidden can be shown using the last item in the menu.
See the History Options section

Blacklining Palette
The Blacklining palette will always be present when Blacklining is loaded but can be hidden or window shaded if not required. It contains the most commonly used and major Blacklining commands. These are:
Turn Blacklining On or Off Switch Deletions Display from Strike-Through to Caret.
Show current levels and Blacklining levels either side of the cursor position. Show or Hide some or all Blacklining marks Enter a value View from and to revision level boxes.
Buttons for New Revision, View Current Revision and View All Revisions.

Special Characters
These enable Blacklining, Document and Project information to be included in a layout. This might be used as a header or footer to a page to give specific information about a job.
An example of a job header using the Special Characters might look like this.below. The fields are all “live” and will update as the information in the job changes. The checksum is a random 10 digit number generated on print or save as EPS, the number once created will only alter if there is a text change on the page.

History Palette
The History Palette can be shown from the Blacklining menu. It contains information on the active Blacklining job monitoring Machines, Users, Revisions and some operations. It can be saved out and exported in various formats including xml for use in other systems for applications such as job costing, billing or auditing.
It is also possible to assign a text box to be a history box. This will update automatically every time a relevant event occurs.

Merge and Remove Blacklining
The Merge and Remove Blacklining commands are under the Blacklining Menu. Choosing these will bring up the dialog below. The merge or remove function can be switched using the appropriate radio button. Merge and remove can be actioned on a Project, Layout, Story or Selected text.
Choosing renumber revisions will renumber the revisions from level 1 if lower revisions are removed while leaving higher ones above. Not choosing this option will leave all revisions with the same numbering as before, but it does mean there may be lower revisions with no content.
WARNING: Remove revisions will act upon all text associated with those revisions, inserted text will be removed and deleted text will be restored. If you want to leave the text unchanged then choose the Merge function, or use the Erase Marks option or Manual Marks function for selected parts of a layout.

Manual Blacklining
Manual Blacklining marks can be made using the Manual Blacklining palette. Show the palette from the Blacklining menu, it will become active when text is selected and Blacklining is on. These functions are also available from the Blacklining menu.,
Manual marks also allows you to edit previous revision level marks by selecting the required past revision. If the text selection made includes differing revision levels, the manual marking will only affect the revision level displayed in the palette.

Printing with Blacklining
There are some print preferences in the Blacklining preferences - see page 5, which control the output of the Blacklining marks. There is also a Blacklining tab in the Print dialog box which gives other options at the time of printing. These options are : choose the revision levels to be printed, whether to have marks showing or hidden, the deletions to be shown as caret or strike-through, and an option to turn side bars on or off.
