What TIFF Export Does…

TIFF Export makes it possible to export a file from QuarkXPress which may be opened by image editing programs such as Adobe Photoshop. The XTension creates a TIFF image of a specified QuarkXPress box, page or spread and saves it to disk with a user-specified name.

Registering TIFF Export

You will find a warranty registration card in your TIFF Export software package. Please fill out, then mail or fax your warranty registration card to Vision’s Edge. Installing TIFF Export

These instructions cover installation for Macintosh XTensions. Unlike previous versions of Vision’s Edge XTensions. The XTensions developed for QuarkXPress 6.0 and higher do not use installers.

Open the folder TIFF Export 6.0 Folder located on the VisionCD or created from the Stuffed document downloaded from the web.

This folder contains four items:

TIFF Export 6.0.xnt

TIFF Export 6.0 Manual.pdf

Vision’s Edge 6.0 Read Me.pdf

Vision’s Edge License.pdf

Note: File extensions may not be visible and the “6.0” will change with future updates.

Read the license agreement.

Accepting the agreement, binds you to its terms.

Copy the file TIFF Export 6.0.xnt to the XTensions folder.

This folder is located in the QuarkXPress 6.x folder.

Copy the file TIFF Export 6.0 Manual.pdf to the location of your choice.

Authenticating TIFF Export

Launch QuarkXPress.

The XTension will start in Demonstration Mode. This means that you have a certain number of days in which you can use the XTension before it expires.

The demo alert appears shortly after QuarkXPress is started.

Enter your Registration Code exactly then click Register.

Enter the keycode exactly including hyphens. It is found on your CD envelope or was provided via email. The only numbers are the last three places of the second group and the last place of the third group. In case of error, check each character for accuracy.

Exporting to a TIFF

TIFF Export creates a TIFF file of the selected box. If you would like to create a TIFF of the entire page or spread, deselect all boxes by clicking on the pasteboard.

Choose Utilities » Export to TIFF…

Select either Page or Spread from the Page menu.

This popup menu controls whether TIFF Export exports a single page or an entire spread of pages to the TIFF file. If a box is selected, this item is disabled.

Enter the page or spread to export.

Appearing to the right of the Page/Spread popup menu, this field lets the user specify which page or spread number is exported to the TIFF file. The number in this field defaults to the number of the page or spread currently active on the document. If a box is selected, this item is disabled.

Select Bit Depth from the Depth menu.

This popup menu offers two options: 24 Bit Color yields a 24-bit color TIFF, and if the popup menu is set to 8 Bit Gray the XTension generates an 8-bit grayscale TIFF.

Enter desired Scale.

The value entered in this field indicates the scale at which the page is depicted in the TIFF file.

Enter the DPI (Dot Per Inch) for the TIFF.

The value entered in this field indicates the dots per inch of the exported TIFF. The DPI value may be between 10 and 400. If an outof-range value is entered in the DPI field, TIFF Export displays an alert to indicate that a TIFF cannot be saved at the specified DPI.

Enter Top, Left, Bottom, and Right Margins.

The margins crop the image area.

Click Save.

After saving the TIFF Export settings, the standard Save File dialog appears.

Enter the Name of the TIFF in the Save As field. Click Save.

• TIFF Export Notes

TIFF Export creates RGB and grayscale TIFFs with no compression. These formats were chosen as the common denominator across platforms and applications as the most usable formats.

TIFF Export creates its images based on the onscreen representation from QuarkXPress. In most cases for placed images, this is a 72 dpi preview unless the document and images were prepared with some foresight. Placed TIFF images produce the best results, as you can control the resolution of their preview when imported (see the section titled Exporting High-Resolution Placed Graphics). EPS images, vector and raster, only include a 72 dpi preview. For best results with EPS files, create the graphic itself at a larger size than it is used in the document. For example, the 72 dpi preview of a 4" x 4" logo will be available at 288 dpi if the logo is placed in QuarkXPress and scaled down to 25%. By reducing the size of the placed EPS to one fourth, the resolution available is four times 72 dpi.

TIFF Export does not anti-alias page elements in the output TIFF. If the image were anti-aliased the appearance of text and lines might be improved, but this would blur the placed images on the page. If the exported TIFF is of a higher resolution than the halftone line-screen when it is printed out, the halftoning will provide minimal anti aliasing. A 300 dpi TIFF of text should appear similar to 300 dpi laser output which is satisfactory for many workflows. As always a TIFF to be printed should be scanned or generated at approximately twice the dpi of the linescreen used in the final output (ie. 300 dpi images for 150 line screens).

TIFF Export is not a software RIP. It does not process the PostScript code of placed EPSs or other PostScript elements.

• Technical Appendix

Because TIFF Export may be generating large files, QuarkXPress may require more memory than usual in order for TIFF Export to run smoothly. The amount of additional memory required by QuarkXPress when generating TIFFs may be estimated with the following formula:

Width x Resolution2 x
Scale2 x 3
= RAM used in mb
10242 x 1002

In the above formula, Width refers to the width in inches of the part of the document being saved as a TIFF. Resolution refers to the value the user enters in the DPI field in the TIFF Export dialog. Scale refers to the value entered in the Scale field in the TIFF Export dialog.

For an 8.5" x 11" document in portrait orientation, the formula for a TIFF generated at 400 dpi, 200% scale would be:

8.5 x 4002 x 2002 x 3 = 15.56 mb RAM
10242 x 1002

For an 8.5" x 11" document in landscape orientation, the formula for a TIFF generated at 400 dpi, 200% scale would be:

11 x 4002 x 2002 x 3 = 20.14 mb RAM
10242 x 1002

For an 8.5" x 11" document in portrait orientation, the formula for a TIFF generated at 400 dpi, 100% scale would be:

11 x 4002 x 2002 x 3 = 3.89 mb RAM
10242 x 1002

For an 8.5" x 11" document in landscape orientation, the formula for a TIFF generated at 400 dpi, 100% scale would be:

11 x 4002 x 1002 x 3 = 5.04 mb RAM
10242 x 1002

When generating large TIFFs using TIFF Export, first shut down other applications to free up the most system memory possible.
