2.0 Introduction
Use ARTS Import to batch convert images to PDF files, quickly and easily. With ARTS Import, users can convert each image to a single PDF, each folder of images into a single PDF or alternatively all images into one. They can also save the settings into a profile for reuse.

3.1 Release Notes for ARTS Import 2.8
• ARTS Import is now a stand alone and no longer requires Acrobat to run.
• Processing speed has greatly increased.
• Convert image types (tiff, gif, bmp, rle, jpg and png).
• Save your profiles for later use.
• DCX and PCX image formats are no longer supported.

3.2 Known Issues
• Windows 2000 Operating System: Not all GIF files are converted when using the shell interface.
• Windows 98 & Windows NT: Unable to register the DLL file. Not compatible.

3.3 System Requirements
ARTS Import requires the following technical specifications:
• Windows 98 SE, ME, NT 4.0, 2000, XP.
• Pentium II 233 MHz or equivalent
• 64 MB RAM
• Adobe Acrobat version 5 or above

3.4 Install
1. Verify that Adobe Acrobat is not running.
2. Execute the installation file provided.
3. Follow the prompts to install ARTS Import.
4. Open ARTS Import from the Start Menu, ‘Start > Programs > ARTS Import’.

3.5 Register
If you have the demo version, and you wish to upgrade, simply perform the following steps:
1. After your purchase has been confirmed, you will receive an email containing your serial number and a link to download the full version of the software.
2. Either reinstall ARTS Import and enter the serial when prompted.
3. Alternatively, open the demo version of ARTS Import.
4. Click the ‘About…’ button.
5. Insert your serial number in the space provided.
6. Click ‘License’.
7. You may need to restart ARTS Import before the changes take effect.

3.6 Uninstall
To uninstall:
1. Open the Control Panel; ‘Start > Settings > Control Panel’.
2. Double click the ‘Add/Remove Programs’ icon.
3. Select ‘ARTS Import’ from the menu.
4. Click ‘Add/Remove’.

4.0 How to import images
Method 1
1. Open ARTS Import.
2. Select your source and destination folder (see section 5.0).
3. Optional: Click ‘Options…’ button and enter your preferences for output file names (see section 5.1).
4. Select the image types you wish to convert (see section 6.1).
5. Optional: Check or uncheck the Convert subfolders, Create a log file and Silent mode boxes (see sections 6.2, 6.3 and 6.4 for more detail).
6. Optional: Click ‘Doc info’ button and specify the metadata for output files (see section 6.5).
7. Select the merging mode (see section 6.6).
8. Click ‘Import’ to import the images into PDF documents.
9. Output PDF files will be found in the destination folder specified in step 2.
Method 2
1. Right-click on your image file/s or folder in Windows Explorer or on your desktop.
2. Go to ‘Arts Import’ and select the merging mode to import your images (see section 8.0 for more detail).
3. Output PDF files will be found where the source image files are located.

5.0 Source and Destination Folders
Source Folder
The location where the images you want to convert reside.
Target Folder
The location that the output PDFs will be stored in:
• Same as source
- Selecting 'same as source' will make ARTS Import place the output PDFs into the Source Folder
• Specified folder
- Selecting 'in' will allow you to enter or browse to a specified target folder.

5.1 File Naming Options
File Naming Options enables you to enter information about saving the imported file by specifying prefix and suffix information. Being able to specify a prefix and / or suffix for the filenames that will get created when images are converted.
To view ‘File Naming Options’, select the ‘Options…’ button from the main dialog. There are two options that you can choose from:
• Same as Original
• Add to Original Base Name
This ‘Add to original Base Name’ function allows you to specify the details of the PDF filename such as:
• The suffix of the filename, and/or
• The prefix of the filename.

6.0 Import Options
6.1 Image Types
The supported image types are TIFF, GIF, BMP, RLE, JPG & PNG (see Compatible Image Types for details), and can be selected from the list as seen below (Figure: Image Types). “Select all” will select all image types to convert, while “Clear” will select none.

6.2 Convert Subfolders
To convert images stored in folders located in the Source folder you have specified, select the Convert subfolders checkbox.

6.3 Create a log file
Selecting this option will allow a log file of the conversion process to be written. The log file will show every file that was processed, and whether they were successfully converted or not.

6.4 Silent Mode
Selecting this option prevents warning and error messages being displayed, hence allowing the processing to continue uninterrupted. Any warnings or errors will be recorded in the log file.

6.5 Document Info
The Doc Info option allows you to create metadata properties to be entered into the output PDF file. This can be accessed through the ‘Metadata Options’ dialog as shown in figure above. To open this dialog, click on “Doc Info…” button from the main menu. The document metadata consists of:
• Title
• Subject
• Author
• Keywords
• Custom Name & Value

6.6 Merging Modes
6.6.1 Each Image -> Single PDF
This mode will see each image converted to a PDF file. The filename of the PDF will be determined by the name of the image being converted (e.g. “Fax-20000503.tif”, would be output as “Fax-20000503.pdf”).

6.6.2 Each Folder’s Image -> Single PDF
This mode converts all images in a folder into a single PDF file. The name of the PDF file is constructed from the full path to the source folder (e.g. If the folder “C:\Images\Faxes\” contained a number of TIFF files, the output PDF would be named “C-Images-Faxes-Tif.pdf”). If converting multiple image types, they will be collected into groups (e.g. a PDF containing tiffs, another containing jpgs, etc.).

6.6.3 All Images -> Single PDF
This mode is the same as “Each Folder’s Images ? Single PDF”, except that it converts all images in all folders, to a single PDF. The name of the file is taken from the full path and folder name of the source folder (e.g. If the folder “C:\Images\Faxes\” contained a number of TIFF files, the output PDF would be named “C-Images-Faxes-Tif.pdf”). If converting multiple image types, they will be collected into groups (e.g. a PDF containing tiffs, another containing jpgs, etc.).

7.0 Save / Load Profiles
To save or load ARTS Import settings, from the main menu dialog, click on ‘Save Profile’ and save to a chosen location. When you wish to load your settings, click on ‘Load Profile’ and select the file you wish to import.
Note: Loading a new profile will replace any current ARTS Import settings with those from the imported file.

8.0 Shell Implementation of ARTS Import
ARTS Import features can also be accessed by right clicking the selected folder/image icon within Windows Explorer or on your desktop. You can right click on the selected image/s and convert it to PDF. The output PDF/s will be placed in the same folder as the source file. Allow single or multiple image conversion with the conversion options:
• Each Image to a single PDF (same as the merging mode in section 6.6.1 Each Image -> Single PDF)
• All images to a single PDF if multiple images are selected (same as the merging mode in section 6.6.3 All Images -> Single PDF)

9.1 View Log
The log file records processing details. One log file is used to record details from all import processes. The general structure being:

9.2 Clear Log
You can delete the information stored in the log file by clicking on the ‘Clear Log’. This will clear all stored data within the log file.

11.1 Acrobat 6.0 Compatibility
“Is ARTS Import compatible with Acrobat 6.0?”
ARTS Import is now a standalone application. Therefore Acrobat is no longer required for it to function.

11.2 Image Conversions
“I have an image that converted with version 2.0 of Import, but does not work with version 2.8?”
As ARTS Import is now stand-alone, some image formats are no longer supported. Unsupported image types include PCX and DCX (Please see Compatible Image Types for more details).

11.3 General
I am converting what I believe to be an Import supported image, but it will not convert. What can I do?
There are several things you can do in this situation.
1. Check the log file it will display which files were not converted, and why.
2. Check the output PDF even if the image did not convert, a PDF file will be output with a description of why the image could not be converted.
3. If this information does not help in solving the problem, contact techsupport@artspdf.com, and where possible, attach both the output PDF and log file (as well as the standard technical information see “troubleshooting” for details).

Also try the ARTS Import conference at the ARTS PDF Forum on our web site at http://forum.artspdf.com
a. The exact version of ARTS Import you are using (this is located by running ARTS Import, and then clicking Help > About ARTS Import). Please also specify whether you are using a demo or full registered version.
b. Whether or not you purchased Maintenance with ARTS Import. If you did purchase Maintenance, please supply your ARTS Import serial number.
c. The exact version of the Operating System you are using (this can be determined from Start ? Settings ? Control Panel ? System)
d. The amount of free disk space remaining (found by double clicking on ‘My Computer’, and then right mouse clicking on the drive and selecting ‘Properties’).
e. The CPU speed and amount of RAM for the system on which ARTS Import is running (e.g. Pentium 233 MMX, 32MB RAM).
f. Any other programs that are running at the time of the error (e.g. Outlook, Internet Explorer, etc).
g. All error messages that were displayed when the error occurred.
h. The exact series of steps that led to the error.
i. Whether this error occurs on every file or just a selected few. If possible, please send us a sample of the file that causes the error.
